Project case study

Clamp-On Ultrasonic Gas Flow Metering for District 9 Gas Transmission Operations

Supply of two fixed clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters for natural-gas flow measurement on District 9 transmission lines — from technical document approval and procurement from the European manufacturer through third-party inspection, customs clearance, installation on a line in service, commissioning and handover to the operator.

Project overview

What this project covers

District 9 Gas Transmission Operations, based in Sari, runs the gas transmission lines of northern Iran. Sanat Khat va Palayesh (SKP) won the district's public tender for two fixed clamp-on ultrasonic gas flowmeters and carried the scope end to end: preparing the technical documentation for client approval, buying from the manufacturer, importing and clearing the equipment, installing it on the line, commissioning it and handing over a working measuring point.

The engineering value of this project lies in the measurement method. Clamp-on transducers are strapped to the outside of the pipe and never penetrate the pressure boundary, so a new measuring point can be created on a transmission line that is already in service — no hot tap, no metering spool, no shutdown and no vented gas. Here the installation and commissioning were carried out on a line running at roughly 38 bar(a), with flow uninterrupted throughout.

The selected instrument is the FLUXUS G721 built by FLEXIM in Germany, configured for pipe sizes from 10 to 48 inches, gas velocities up to 18 m/s and gas temperatures from 5 to 60 °C, with ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 transducers and a Zone 2 transmitter. That operating envelope is what makes the assembly a district-wide measurement asset rather than a single fixed point: it can be redeployed to other lines as operational needs change.

Principal project responsibilities

Systems and delivery

Technical scope of the project

Ultrasonic measurement system

The system works on the transit-time difference of ultrasonic signals with correlation processing, configured for natural gas on large-diameter transmission lines.

  • Two fixed clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters, with no penetration of the pipe wall
  • Dual-channel transmitter with synchronised channel averaging to reduce the effect of flow profile
  • Temperature and current inputs for live temperature and pressure from the process transmitters
  • Adjustable mounting rails, acoustic damping material and tension-belt fixation for large-diameter lines
  • Industrial communication output for connection to the operator's monitoring and recording systems

Procurement, inspection and logistics

The bulk of the contractual obligation was procurement from the European manufacturer and the complete import chain through to delivery at the client's warehouse.

  • Purchase from the manufacturer and management of technical correspondence through to end of manufacture
  • Third-party pre-shipment inspection and issue of the certificate of inspection (COI)
  • Order registration, sea freight, customs clearance and the statutory import permits
  • National standards organisation approval, certificate of origin and the manufacturer's technical dossier
  • Delivery to the client's warehouse against a signed handover record

Installation, commissioning and handover

Installation took place on a line in service, which made site preparation, coordination with the operator and HSE compliance inseparable from the technical work.

  • Site preparation requirements issued and verified before work began
  • Pipe surface preparation, application of the damping material and setting of the rails and transducers
  • Transmitter installed in its field enclosure, cabled and terminated
  • Configuration of pipe and acoustic path parameters, functional testing and stabilisation of the measurement
  • Commissioning and final testing with the client's representative present, then handover to the operator
